You connected your Apple device to your computer and launched iTunes only to discover that the application does not recognize your iOS device. The problem may be hardware-related, or the issue may be with the iTunes drivers or software. If iTunes fails to find your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, walk through a few troubleshooting steps to identify and resolve the issue either in Windows 10 or the Apple Device Manager.

iTunes Update

Apple regularly updates its iTunes software to fix issues and provide new features. If you have any problem with iTunes, update the latest version, which often fixes the problem with device recognition. Before you run the update, which can take anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour, depending on your connection and the size of the udpate, disconnect all iOS devices from your computer, then launch iTunes. Check for software updates in the iTunes Help section. Connect your device to iTunes after the update is complete to see if the update fixes the issue with recognizing your iOS device.

Hardware Failure

Apple

Like any hardware, the port that attaches your device may fail. Connect your iOS device to another port on your computer. Check the ends of the data cable for dust and debris. Use a lint-free cloth to wipe the connector and a can of compressed air to clean the port into your machine. Connect your device to the computer with another Apple cable, if one is available and you believe the lack of connection is due to a hardware failure.

Other Software May Be The Culprit

When you install iTunes, the Apple Mobile Device Support service also installs. If this service has stopped or fails to start, iTunes will not recognize devices when connected to the computer with the USB cable. To verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed, open the Windows Control Panel by pressing the Start button in the bottom left corner. Type in Control Panel in the Search Bar . Once opened, click “Uninstall a Program.” Locate the Apple Mobile Device Support entry. If this service is not installed, you must uninstall QuickTime, iTunes, Apple Application Support and Apple Software update, then reinstall iTunes.

You can try to stop and then restart the service before uninstalling Apple Mobile Device Support if you prefer. Stopping and restarting the service may temporarily resolve the issue. However, if the service continues to stop unexpectedly, reinstall the service. Open the Services dialog box in Windows 10, locate the Apple Mobile Device Support driver, then select the option to stop the service. Restart the service from the dialog box, then connect your iOS device to your computer to see if iTunes finds the device.

The Driver Situation

Occasionally, the Apple driver for your device will become corrupt or fail to start. Check the driver. Press the Start Button and open the Search box in Windows, and then searching for “devmgmt.msc.” Click the Device Manager entry to open the device configuration tool. Click the “+” next to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers entry to view all universal serial bus drivers. Right-click on the “Apple Mobile Device USB Driver” option, then click “Enable” to enable the driver.

If you need to reinstall the driver, right-click the entry, then click “Uninstall.” Click “OK” to uninstall the driver. Right-click again, then click the “Scan for Hardware Changes” option. The wizard finds and installs the driver for the USB ports. Connect your device to the computer and open iTunes to see if the application finds your device.

Conflicting Software

If you use the computer with iTunes installed to sync devices from other manufacturers, the software may conflict, causing iTunes to fail to recognize your device. Apple Mobile Device Support recommends that you temporarily uninstall the connectivity software from the other manufacturer, then attempt to connect your iOS device to iTunes once again. If iTunes finds your iOS device after the software is uninstalled, check the manufacturer’s site for a patch or fix for the issue.
